CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Ashifter coyote was caught in a barbed wire fence up near Highway 183 just outside of Austin. The fence surrounded one of the last large cattle ranches, surrounded by new houses and parks. A nervous woman in moss green yoga pants and a matching jacket, her blonde hair pulled back in a loose ponytail, was standing nearby with her phone out ready to record something or call for help.

She wasn’t alone. After all she had already called 311 for animal control, 911 for the sheriff’s office and a couple of TV stations who ignored her. Only animal control stayed on the line and eventually sent two officers.

The taller, dark-haired animal protection officer nervously tapped the wand hidden in the special pocket sewn into his pants. His colleague stood next to him, not sure what to do, backing away to the car.

There was no way he could use magic in front of him and reveal he was a Wizard. He could see the sparkling gray with bits of deep brown magic trail that the shifter had left in his wake on his run for home in the early morning hours. His destination was one of the nearby pale grey stone two-story houses with a small fenced-in backyard where nothing really ever happened.

Even in the present climate with magic out in the open, it was never a discussion on the neighborhood Facebook group and was rarely mentioned at the pool. The shifter knew that and was always careful to come home under the cover of darkness. He didn’t need to replace the uproar over cars going too fast or whether someone was properly weeding their front yard.

But there had been a loud thunderstorm across Dell Valle the night before, and a dense fog came in on its heels. Even that wasn’t enough to turn him around in the dark. After all, he had lived in the neighborhood for years and knew every rock and every tree.

It was as if someone had placed a new obstacle in his path made of packed earth. Except this one flailed its arms and roared in anger and frustration. The shifter wasn’t exactly sure if he was dealing with another magical or some form of a human, but he knew a threat to getting home safely to his bed when he saw it.

The figure ran after him, surprising the shifter and swatting at him. The coyote responded with his teeth bared, sinking them into the outstretched hand, surprised when he bit down on a firm, solid clay.

A shiver ran through him and his fur bristled down his back. He let out a mournful howl, looking for help from any other shifters in the area, taking a zigzag line away from home. No need to bring trouble to his doorstep. He could hear the angry growling and felt the earth shaking as he ran over the brush, barely missing twisted pecan trees and sage bushes.

The Vergold had chased him for over half a mile, finally giving up and turning east to plod along toward the sunrise, pulling a hood up over his oversized head.
