Erebos

The Dark Forest was not a place I wanted to be. My stomach lurched every second we crept closer to the damned forest. We were finding Maree for Nikeria, I reminded myself.

“Valgabob, dooshgadorf, hmm, humuhumu, Vurgonox, maLOOOOO-ouch you little devil.”

Aderyn elbowed Bjorn mid belt. “Keep singing that fucking song and you’ll lure worse than Maree to us.”

I believed her, she had lived all over Elphyne. She was orphan and had been traded through the courts until Bjorn’s aunt adopted her in the Summer lands and kept her.

“Like what little devil.” He taunted, Bjorn was rarely serious and never had been for as long as I’d known him.

“Her coven nests up ahead,” Aderyn said.

I could see the smoke and light of flames ahead of us, I also smelled the blood. As we neared, so little sound exists only that of ripping of flesh, the tearing of sinew, the sucking of blood. A few soft moans are quickly silenced.

The female drinkers were mid-feast, their slender bodies moving in sync as they tore into the beings, their faces contorted with terror, one of them noticed us, her red eyes coruscate.

“Erebos,” she hissed, she sauntered towards us, “What do we owe the pleasure?” She looked at Aderyn like a snack.

“I need to speak to Maree.” I said.

she smiled and motioned her hand toward the cottage in the middle of the clearing. I bowed my head to her in thanks and ordered Bjorn and Aderyn to leave for their own safety, they said they’d stay close just in case I needed them and departed into the trees.

As I made my way to the cottage another coven member caught my eye. Aleysa, she growled and narrowed her eyes. I dipped my head in respect. This was already not going well.
