Chapter 9

Kiera would not have thought it possible, given the events that led her to the seaside inn, but she slept well—she even dreamed. Good dreams, about simple things. Easy and quick to dismiss. By the time she opened her eyes, they were already sliding away like water, leaving nothing but a smile.

It must be this place.

There were only a few times she’d beheld such beauty—all of them had been something to do with the fae. Whether it was the ancient groves of the Seraphine Forest, or the coastal meadows that surrounded Saveen, there was a quality that seemed to transcend the common mortal plain.

Taviel was such a place.

She pushed slowly upright, leaning on her elbows, gazing out the window over the head of the beautiful man sleeping beside her. They had left it open, the night had not been cold, and the smell of sweet ocean breezes mixed with a crush of pale flowers had seeped into the room.

She inhaled deeply, filling her lungs.

I want to see more.

Careful not to wake him, she swung her legs over the side of the bed and tiptoed to a trunk that had been left by one of the fae who’d prepared the rooms. Inside were all the same things they had already been given on the ship, and even more. Gowns of delicate silk in every color she could imagine. Long, silvery cloaks that whispered across the ground behind her, fluttering with every step.

She reached for one of the tunics, plain and white, and probably meant for hard travel, not a day spent in quiet discussion along a beach. It reminded her of the clothes Eden had brought that first morning in Farion, when she’d stood in front of the mirror, wondering at the girl staring back.

Wear the tunic.

She gave it a tug, then she heard a quiet laugh. That was when she remembered who’d been sleeping beside her. You could be as careful as you wanted, shifters weren’t easy to slip past.

“Of course you reach for the shirt.” Jesse stretched his arms with a smile, looking just as refreshed as she was herself. There was a glow to his skin that hadn’t been there since before they’d struck out to sea, and for once, his eyes were clear and unshadowed. “Gowns fit for a princess, but you reach for the shirt. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you’d gotten a taste for adventure.”

“We’ve been granted passage to a sacred immortal island,” she answered teasingly, rays of golden sunlight warming the little room. “Are you really going to stay in bed?”

Instead of rising to join her, he spread his arms across the pillows, luxuriating like some kind of lazy prince. It suited him. Not since they’d escaped the desert, found themselves suddenly idle on the deck of a ship, had she seen him so at leisure. And there had been a constant edge to that.

They had been travelling with a giant.

“Come here,” he said softly.

She abandoned the trunk at once and
