CLAY

I made my way down the stairs after I ended the phone call with Lana. I had been up and down the staircase at the opposite end of the building a few times already this morning but stopped when it started getting close to time for her to come back. I didn’t want her to realize how well I was getting around on my own because she'd start pushing me out the door.

Oh, she’d be nice about it, but I knew that the minute she realized I was able to take care of myself, I was out. I didn’t understand why she insisted that we keep our distance from each other, and she refused to talk about it, always changing the subject and asking me how a member of the team was doing or what was going on with some of our old friends.

No one noticed me slip through the side door into the breakroom. I walked down the hall to Lana’s office but stopped short when I heard her talking to Patrice.

I was stunned to finally hear, after four years apart, why she’d left me. She left me because of football? What the hell? I was a player when she met me, and she was by my side through college and the draft.

How could she think she was stifling my dream when she was my dream?

I heard movement inside the office and rushed back out into the hall before they realized I’d been eavesdropping. I sat down on the stairs to wait for Lana and thought about what I’d just heard. That was more explanation than I’d ever gotten about why she’d suddenly left me and refused to consider staying together.

There’d never been a huge blowout or any hint of me cheating because I’d never consider doing that. I took our marriage vows to heart and still do to this day. I caught unimaginable amounts of shit from the other players because I refused to even look at the jersey chasers who followed the team like it was their religion.

As a matter of fact, the biggest bones of contention I had with my teammates concerned their lifestyles, not their behavior on the field. Apparently, Lana didn’t understand that, and it had caused us years of grief apart when we should have been happy together.

The door opened and Lana appeared. She let out a sound of distress when she saw me. “Clay! What the hell? Are you okay? I was going to have one of the guys help you down the stairs!”

“I made it just fine, Sugar,” I said as I used the rail to help me stand. “I’m ready to go get some sunshine with my sunshine.”

“Whatever,” Lana said with a dramatic eye roll. “You should have let me find one of the guys to help you down the stairs, Clay. You’ve got to be careful. The last thing we need is for you to break a bone and add that recovery to your downtime. If that happens, you
