Chapter Twelve
Back at Andrea Wilson’s place, tensions were running high. Deanna felt so bad for Andrea and her mom. Their whole lives had been turned upside down in the span of one evening. Andrea should be picking out her floral arrangements and seating chart, not worrying about jail time.
Deanna couldn’t make everything right, but she could help. Despite all her friend had been through, she knew Andrea wasn’t capable of murdering someone, even a first-rate jerk like Zach Ziegler. Despite Deanna knowing her friend was innocent, there seemed to be the very real possibility that Andrea might find herself sitting in a jail cell at some point.
The detective was undeniably handsome, but Deanna didn’t know how keen his intellect was. Besides, people made mistakes all the time. What if somehow Andrea was wrongfully arrested?
Deanna couldn’t just sit back and wait. She had to take action. It wasn’t in her DNA to sit idly by. She was highly devoted to her friends and family. That was especially the case now.
Deanna had to find a way to prove Andrea was innocent. Unfortunately, the only way to do that was to find the real killer. If that’s what it took, that’s what she’d do.
For the moment at least, there were more pressing matters. Namely, trying to keep her friend from losing her mind. A panicked Andrea did no one any good.
Andrea’s mother had an idea.
“I’ll get you some meds to calm you down,” Rebecca said before walking out of the room.
Andrea was so rattled that she was shaking. “I can’t believe this.”
“Look, I’ll find a way to get you through this,” Deanna insisted.
“How?”
“I’m a reporter. I know how to get to the root of things and uncover the truth.”
“Deanna, you know I love you, but you write stories about dog fashion shows,” Andrea said.
“Not anymore. I’m going to get to the bottom of this.”
Andrea started bouncing her knee without realizing it. “I just want this to be over.”
“I’m not going to let you go to jail for a crime you didn’t commit. You can trust me on that.”
“What can you do to stop it?” Andrea asked.
“I’ll figure something out. But know this, I’m going to do everything in my power to make the police realize that you’re innocent,” Deanna said.
Deanna then saw something surprising out the corner of her eye. She noticed Rebecca standing in the doorway listening to the conversation with no pill bottle in her hand. She couldn’t help but wonder how long Rebecca had been standing there? Why hadn’t she gotten the pills? More importantly, why did she have such a worried look on her face? These were unsettling questions.
Deanna turned back to Andrea. “I’m going to take care of this.”
Deanna then turned to Rebecca in the doorway. “Ms. Wilson, can I talk to you outside for a second?”
Rebecca seemed skittish but agreed. “Uh, sure.”
