Chapter 12

By the time we left Abbott Acres, it was almost eleven-thirty. Mom, Tillie, Heidi, and Bridget talked nonstop on the way home about wedding plans. My mind was on Mr. Sadowski. I was supposed to go by later today to tell him how things were going, but I figured while I was near his place, I might as well make a pit stop first.

“Can I make a stop real quick?” I asked.

“Where?” Mom asked.

I sighed. “I just want to let Mr. Sadowski know how things went yesterday. Let him know he shouldn’t have any more trouble.”

“Who’s Mr. Sadowski?” Heidi asked from the back.

“Just this old man Gramps and I are helping out. I promise it will only take about five minutes.”

“I’m game,” Bridget said.

“Me too,” Heidi added.

“I don’t see why we can’t stop off real quick,” Tillie said.

Mom nodded. “Okay. But let’s make it quick.”

I turned down Mr. Sadowski’s two-lane road. In truth, I kinda missed talking to the old man. I also missed looking at all his beautiful antiques. We bumped along the pitted road and made small talk about the wedding and Jax’s bakery.

I made the right into Mr. Sadowski’s driveway and parked in front of his place. “It’s a little scary inside. He’s got great antiques, but the place is a mess.”

“The outside isn’t much better,” Mom said.

“Stay behind me,” I advised. “He gets a little twitchy with the gun.”

“Awesome!” Heidi laughed.

We tiptoed through Mr. Sadowski’s treasured trash, and when he didn’t stick his gun out through his homemade peephole, I took that as a good sign. Just in case, though, I figured I better alert him I was here. I knew Old Blue wasn’t quite the guard dog as Duke.

“Mr. Sadowski?” I called through the closed front door. “It’s me, Jaycee Sullivan.”

There was no response.

I knocked on the door and thought I heard Old Blue whimper.

“Mr. Sadowski?” I hollered again. “Are you in there?”

Still nothing.

Tillie reached over and turned the knob. The door popped open and I sucked in a breath. I didn’t take this to be a good sign. Mr. Sadowski wasn’t the type to leave his house unlocked. Something had to be up.

“I think now I want you to stand behind me,” Mom said. “I’ve watched too many movies to know this won’t be good.”

I let her take the lead because…well, because she was my mom. I fell in line behind Tillie.

“Wow, it really is a beautiful mess in here,” Tillie said. “I recognize a lot of nice antiques mixed in with junk.”

We pushed into the dimly-lit living room, and I was momentarily relieved when nothing sinister jumped out at me. I was about to head down the hallway when I heard a low whine. My eyes drifted down to the space between the couch and the coffee table, and I screamed at the sight of Old Blue stretched out over Mr. Sadowski’s prone body on the floor. Old Blue lifted her head off Mr. Sadowski’s back and her soulful, sad eyes looked at us.
