Chapter 25

“My whole mouth tastes like I was sucking on a cotton ball,” Praxis complained. His braces flashed as he grimaced.

“Blame it on Niko. He has your brothers convinced you have his DNA,” Andriana told her son as she patted his back. Praxis deftly stepped to the left, just out of her reach. Costas didn’t know if it was because he was upset with his mother or if he was being a teenager. As he studied his face, Costas found a dozen features or more that resembled Niko. He wasn’t sure how to handle that Niko had been drugged so he could unwittingly be a sperm donor for Andriana.

He was afraid to let himself think about it fully, or the rage might overcome his good sense; he wanted to choke both Andriana and Gelon. If the pair wanted a kid so badly, why didn’t they just make one? They’d done it before, or the twins wouldn’t be alive. What Costas had learned was that Niko apparently didn’t have a physical relationship with at least Andriana, which unnecessarily pleased him. However, he was so used to the inappropriateness of his feelings and the day was already so momentous that he didn’t fight it. He was glad Niko didn’t like the pair; they were horribly cruel individuals who’d never deserve him, much less anyone else.

As for the dragon in question, he’d quietly allowed the nurse to take his DNA and was now standing next to Costas, not wilting under the venomous looks Andriana continued to aim in his direction. Niko had come so far from the scared man who teleported to Las Vegas with the Lich Sentinel. And if he still preferred to steady himself by glancing down, then what difference did it make? There was nothing wrong with shyness; it was simply another facet to this remarkable man Costas was privileged to know.

“It most certainly is not Niko’s fault,” Damian bit out. The fury in his eyes was a living thing, and Costas understood it was taking all his significant willpower not to shout at his mother about the drugging and every other evil thing she’d done to Niko. For the first time, Costas thought it was a shame that the treaty they’d signed to join the Council prevented the dragons from punishing their own—barring small infractions that didn’t fall under the aegis of the Order of the Fallen Knights and Sentinel Brotherhood. Without a doubt, Andriana and Gelon would be clapped in chains for what they’d done, but it was outside the jurisdiction of the Council, which made any real justice impossible.

Niko lifted his head and offered Praxis a tentative smile. “Was today your first time flying?”

“Yeah dude, and it totally sucked. I was so bored. Next time I do it, I plan to be in dragon form.”

“I’ve never flown except when shifted,” Niko replied. “I’ll take your advice and skip it in the future.”

“Excellent choice.”

“It must’ve been exciting to finally meet your brothers.”

Praxis leveled a glare at his mother, who pursed her lips at her thirteen-year-old son’s ire.
