The second we turned into the cul-de-sac, Watson went into hysterics. As he had when we’d approached Ethel Beaker’s house, he propped his forepaws on the dash, but this time he accompanied it with an excited bark, plopped back down, did a jig sort of circle over the passenger seat, and then back up on the dash.

“I swear, you found the fountain of youth last week or something. You’ve become the puppy I never knew you used to be.” Since Delilah’s driveway was filled with other cars, I came to a stop by the curb and reached over to scratch Watson between the ears. He grinned at me, actually grinned. “You’ve been happy before, but you tend to spread it out. It’s never been this many days in a row. It’s weird. I’m not complaining, mind you, but it’s weird.”

In response, Watson spun a few more circles on the car seat, then barked impatiently.

“There, that sounded demanding. More like your normal self.” Though I probably wouldn’t admit it, I found Watson’s grumpiness utterly charming and adorable. I often pictured him as one of those two grumpy old men on the Muppets who sat in the balcony of the opera and complained about everything, trapped inside a corgi body. But seeing Watson so happy made my heart swell and melt all at the same time. I held the door open for him as I exited. “Your Highness.”

Watson practically leapt from the Mini Cooper and then tore off in an explosion of snow across Delilah’s lawn, leaving a wide trench in his wake.

From the onslaught of howling and braying from inside Delilah’s house, her three basset hounds knew Watson had arrived.

Watson didn’t wait for me to politely ring the doorbell and began bounding up to pound his front paws on the door. I was only halfway up the walk before Delilah, wearing her Pink Panthers jacket, answered. “Well, hello handsome man! Your fan club awaits, of both the canine and the female variety.”

Watson paused long enough to allow Delilah to cup his face in her hands and press a quick kiss to his nose before darting around her and disappearing inside.

She gave me a small smile as I approached, and despite being breathtakingly beautiful, she didn’t quite look herself. “We’re glad you’re here too.”

“Thanks for having me, especially so last minute.” Unsure what to do, I reached over and gave her a hug, one that was awkward on both of our parts. Why had I done that? Delilah and I had never hugged in greeting before.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, Leo whispered, guilty conscience.

Delilah didn’t address that and held the door open for me as she had Watson. “Come on in. The rest are already here—I told you to come thirty minutes late. It was only fair to give the ladies fair warning.”

I’d only been to Delilah’s house a couple of times, and even though I knew what to expect, it wasn’t much less of a shock than the first time.
