This technique is preferable to the previous one for a few reasons. First, I was much more steady, and the tripod was less susceptible to tipping over since the weight was not being supported on the very top of the tripod. Secondly, this method is quicker and more flexible in regards to the lateral and vertical adjustment of the rifle. Since the tripod leg is splayed out at an angle, moving the tripod left and right gives you all the lateral and vertical adjustment needed in one quick motion. This makes transitioning between targets much quicker and more effective than any other method I’ve tried with the tripod as a rear rest.
However, this technique is not without its drawbacks. Recoil management can suffer depending on the position, so running optics on a slightly lower than usual magnification is recommended to maintain some self-spotting ability. Another drawback is space considerations. The best way to use this technique is fully deploying the tripod legs. This opens up the total area of adjustment available and gives more room for the firing arm to wrap around to get into position.
This obviously takes up larger amounts of space around the shooter, which may not always be an option when working in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Uneven or rocky ground can also slow down and complicate the position. This technique is best suited for somewhat static positions where there isn’t much movement around other obstacles such as doorways, large rocks, furniture, etc.
