TECHNIQUE 6
No doubt this technique surpasses all others in its complexity. However, a regular practice will ensure all success.
This method is called mind-worship. After having gone through his morning chores including bath the practitioner should sit down on his asana. As he slowly closes his eyes he should try to obtain an idea-free mind.
Now work up before you the image of the God you worship. Work up the image to emerge in front of you. It must appear to stand before you in bold contours. No other idea or distraction of any sort should be allowed to cross your mind. In my own case I look at the image in as real a form as its animate incarnation is normally viewed. I devote all my worshipful attention to the image. I bathe it. I dry it in soft silken cloth. I dress it up in colourful attire. I decorate it using the purest objects. I lay at its feet colourful flowers. I shower on the image a bath of scent. I put a light in front of the image. I place flowers and fruits as we normally do as part of worship.
All these jobs I do while sitting on my asana. The entire job takes half an hour, if not more. I derive a particular delight doing this worshipful job.
Nothing crosses my mind at that time. The object is before me. I see only the object. I also see the various ingredients of worship. I see the same sight as I do in a temple dedicated to my God. I chant a particular mantra in worship. My mantra has been: OM GAM GANPATAYE NAMAH.
I gave vivid details of this worship only to drive home that the practitioner achieves through it a rare capability. He develops a rare strength to entertain only such thoughts as he would like to do.
As you read these lines, you might presume that this exercise is not as difficult as is being suggested. It is indeed very difficult. It needs a regular practice spread over a long time. This meditation is of a high order. It has immense benefits. The ingredients give us not only physical benefits. The light you offer to your god spreads out an inner light within you and even within the people who might be sitting outside. The flowers, the scents and all other ingredients of worship send out a spiritual fragrance which spreads over all people both inside and outside.
It gives you a particular satisfaction. When I offer food to my god, I derive a particular delight.
Subsequently when I bring my concentration to bear fully on the image, I do not find the image any longer. I see the god himself in all his majesty and magnificence. I see his brooding eyes and smiling lips. It is a rare sight the distance between the devotee and the god is abridged. In a way the devotee finds himself totally submerged in his god.
This is the ultimate stage of this meditation. You can reach a still higher stage.
