CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The mansion where our book club met was perched atop the highest point in Seaside Cove. As we approached the large wooden front door, I couldn't help but notice the knocker shaped like a ram. The houses lining the street were all of similar size, but none compared to the pristine condition of this particular one. I took a moment to admire the stunning view from this vantage point. From here, I could see the river, the causeway, and Horseshoe Island with its twinkling lights. And, of course, the remnants of sunset over the Gulf. It was a breathtaking sight.

"Ah, quite a view, isn't it?" Maeve exclaimed, reaching up to give the brass door knocker a good bang against the plate. "Wait until you see inside, lass. This is Eve's husband's family home. He's passed on now, God rest his soul. I understand he was one of Seaside Cove's finest citizens. And Eve, she knows everything and everyone in this wee town."

“Welcome, come on in.” The woman who opened the door for us had a warm, welcoming smile. Gracious in the way only a certain generation of Southern women can be. Her unpretentious strand of pearls and discreet earrings were not ostentatious. As I was admiring her short, stylish haircut with its feathered gray streaks it hit me. But before I could say anything, she took my hand in both of hers. “Maeve’s talked about her lovely niece. I’m delighted I finally got to meet you, Katie.”

Thank you for including me, Mrs. Brooks.” This woman hosting Maeve’s book club was none other than the famous author E.L. Brooks herself.

“Please call me Eve. Now come on in and join the others.”

“You have a lovely home. And such a terrific view of Seaside Cove.”

She grinned. “Believe me, I know how very fortunate I am to live here with the natural beauty but also surrounded by the wonderful people of Seaside Cove. Then throw in that I get to kill for a living…I’m one lucky woman.”

Maeve elbowed me. “That’s her favorite line.”

Eve walked ahead of us, turning to wink at me and smile at Maeve. “I love to pull that one out every so often.” She twisted her arm behind her back to give a palm up, and Maeve slapped it conspiratorially.

We were led to the home’s library, a spacious room with high ceilings. The faint scent of old books and polished wood lingered in the air, mixed with the smell of fresh-cut flowers. There was so much to take in. Oriental rugs in deep, rich hues covered the hardwood floors. Against the far wall was a grand fireplace, its mantle adorned with family photos and porcelain sculptures. Above it hung a painting of what must have been the original owners of the mansion, their stern faces looking down at us. In front of the large windows sat a vintage mahogany desk with a well-worn leather desk chair. Numerous upholstered pieces were pulled into a circle where the other members of the book club sat.
