Chapter 10

The Lakeside Motel was a short drive. It was a small, family-owned motel that stretched along the water just around the bend from the café. There were about thirty rooms in the motel that was built with brick, now painted gray. It was older, but very well-kept and updated thanks to the Johnson family who had owned it for as long as I could remember.

Josie Johnson was at the front desk when they walked in. Josie was a member of Sweetwater Springs Baptist also and served on several committees with Momma.

“Annie! Glory! What brings you two ladies out this way?” she greeted us with a sweet smile.

“We are following up on a visitor from church on Sunday.” I fudged. “I think his name is Sam Baylor. Is he staying here at the motel? We’d love to pay him a quick visit.” I really felt bad misleading Josie, but, after all, I am a member of the church staff and we did need to meet all the guests that visited our services, right?

“Yes, I believe Mr. Baylor is staying in Room 11. It’s down at the far end on the back side. I’m not sure if he’s here right now, but you are welcome to go knock and see. If you want to leave him a message, just let me know and I’ll make sure he gets it!”

“Thanks, Josie!” We chimed in unison as we walked back to the car. Driving down to the end of the building, I pulled around the corner to the back side of the motel. These rooms overlooked a beautiful view of Smith Lake and the best part was that Josie wouldn’t have a direct view of us while we did our looking around.

Each motel room had a parking space with a coordinating room number stenciled on the pavement. Space number 11 was empty.

I knocked, just to be sure, but there was no answer. I tried the doorknob, but as I expected, it was locked.

“Let’s try there!” Momma nudged me a little harder than she intended and I stumbled over a crack in the parking lot. “Sorry!” She grinned and pointed to a small screened porch just off the back of the room.

“Shhhhh!” I motioned for Momma to follow tiptoeing gingerly around to the deck. The door to the screened porch was unlocked.“A lot of people don’t think about checking the sliding doors to their patio before they go out. Maybe the door to the room off the deck isn’t locked either!” I whispered and smiled as I felt the sliding door glide open.

The room was pretty basic but clean and looked like it would provide the necessities. The carpet looked fairly new in a nice neutral light brown coordinating with the brown and blue floral bedspread on the double bed. Hanging over the bed was a beautiful painting of a lake scene done by a local artist that Kelly had mentioned when we were out shopping last weekend. I made a mental note to Google him to see more of his work.
