“We should go to back to the treehouse,” Orin said. “Linda is right about the forests being the safest place to be right now. Forests have a calmer sense of magic than most places. It will be one of the last places affected by what is going on, so we’ll be the safest there.”

I agreed with him. Plus I have been dying to get back to his home in the trees ever since I got out of the wall in the bakery.

“I’m going to stay here,” Ned said. “Someone has to make sure the bookstore remains standing.”

Just like I thought, he’ll go down with the ship.

“I’ll stay with you,” Persephone said. “Someone has to make sure that you remain standing.”

Ned laughed and then thanked her as he went to start the kettle and make tea to calm their nerves.

Orin turned to Chet.

“You’re welcome to come with us to the Muir Woods,” he said.

I actually kind of couldn’t believe that he was inviting Chet to come along. I thought for sure that Orin would be ecstatic that he and I finally had some time alone together in the treetops, even if it was just because we were fleeing magical destruction. It didn’t seem at all like him to want Chet to tag along.

“Really?” Chet said. “What’s the catch?”

“No catch,” Orin answered. “I’d just rather not leave you unattended while we wait for Linda. I’m sure you can understand why I might not trust to leave you here amidst the magical mayhem that you’ve caused.”

I could see that the two of them were about to get into it again, so I quickly diverted attention.

“You can come too, April,” I said. “All four of us can go together. You’ll love the Muir Woods; it’s beautiful there.”

Chet and April looked at each other awkwardly. I don’t think either of them was completely comfortable with the four of us going to stay in a treehouse together. It was like the double-date except amplified and with no way to just leave the restaurant if things got weird again.

“I don’t know,” she said. “I should probably stay here and—”

“You should go,” Persephone said as she tried to help me out with convincing them.

“Your elemental magic isn’t safe here in Brewster right now. No offense, but you’re kind of in the same boat as a druid; very susceptible to Earth’s magic being out of whack.”

April thought it over and then reluctantly agreed to come with us. Chet, of course, would go anywhere that I went.
