Chapter Ten

By the time we finally reach the Drohlu village, I am spent. I am too tired to so much as blink. Brandy is the first person to come running, and from then on out I am completely taken care of. They bathe me, feed me, even rub my poor, tired feet. When they discover that a night with Thion was followed by countless hours on his sakin and I am in tears from the pain, one of them, a smiling female named Liliata, gives me a pot of mysterious cream that will, she assures me, wipe away the discomfort.

I didn’t realize how seeing Brandy again would affect me. Because we were never close, I wasn’t overly excited about reconnecting—but when I saw her familiar, serene face, everything changed. I threw myself into her arms as her big, glowering mate stood behind her and watched closely, as though I might suddenly start smacking the crap out of her.

She is heavily pregnant, and though she doesn’t say anything, I can see she’s worried. She believes she has gone at least two weeks over her due date, and I don’t need to tell her that being made pregnant by an alien could have dire consequences. She knows. But maybe she’ll simply have a longer pregnancy and deliver a perfect baby.

She seems to believe her child is meant for something special. But even if the child is born to go on to do great things, that doesn’t mean Brandy will survive the birth. I think that’s what has her worried—leaving a child in a harsh world without her.

I shudder. No, I don’t want kids. Not here. I can’t imagine anything more terrifying.

“Before you meet the shaesheni,” Brandy tells me, “you will rest and get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow I will take you to see her. Or the day after. You will stay with Kaleon and me for now.”

Thion is with the healer, and they’ll let me in to see him tomorrow, as well. I’m so tired that I don’t argue. He’s in good hands. Brandy swears it. “If anyone can help him,” she says, “Chaskie can.”

I sit in my very own bedroom in her rather large valchen, the house Kaleon built for her. “It’s just been finished,” she tells me. “He wanted it done before the baby came.”

Kaleon doesn’t say anything to me. I don’t think he likes me. Maybe he believes I’m like Natalie. I don’t care. I don’t need to get to know him. As soon as Thion is better, we’re going back to the camp.

“He doesn’t mind staying here being a village skouldi instead of a border skouldi?” I ask her. “Thion seems to think it’s the worst thing that could happen to a man.”

“He gets restless,” she admits, as we sit in her back garden and admire her flowers, “and when he does, he goes off to the camps for a while and comes back calm and content.” She pats her enormous belly. “But now that I’m so close, he won’t leave my side.
