At first, Peterson and Seligman tried to locate all possible strengths through various means, including: brainstorming among the leading scholars, discussion with participants at psychological conferences, and surveying psychological, philosophical and other literature that addresses good character.
Then, faced with hundreds of possible candidates for character strengths, they applied several criteria to distil the main strengths, which they believed to be universal. There are ten such criteria, but the most notable are the following (Peterson & Seligman, 2004):
