Chapter 14

It had been two weeks since Bree and her family took up residence in the school basement, and it looked as though that wasn’t going to change any time soon. During that time, Principal Cailleach had reached out to the grandmother who lived in the non-magical reality. According to her, the elderly Castille had seemed gruff, but satisfied that everyone was at least safe, and she didn’t seem to be exhibiting the same strange behavior as before. None of Bree’s family bought that for a second.

Principal Cailleach explained that she was working on a pocket reality that would contain beds and a fully functional bathroom. The wintry woman had spent the whole summer creating a few pocket classrooms within the school, though. A full suite was a little more difficult.

The Castilles spent Samhain in the damp space instead of around a bonfire. They didn’t share stories about the dead either. That wasn’t the worst thing in the world as far as Bree was concerned, considering they avoided that topic most days.

Unfortunately, without the distraction of Samhain’s traditions, the reality of their dank and dreary environment was inescapable. Bree had very little hope that things would get better, and felt certain that it was her fault they were in this situation. If I’d just done as Hermes wanted, everyone would be safe.

After getting an update from Mr. Finn and Ms. Sirin, Bree knew better than to think of the school as a sanctuary. Hermes was adding all of Cal’s garbage to a dense ball of matter and using the powers of one of the highest level gods to create something out of it. Whatever it was, it wouldn’t be good for Bree, and probably everyone else in her reality. No one in her close-knit group of confidants knew if the boundaries Principal Cailleach had placed on the school would be able to hold up to Hermes once he inevitably escaped his prison. Though the principal was a winter goddess, she had nothing on the son of Zeus.

At least the weather had taken a pleasant turn with November’s arrival. Bree felt grateful for that when she made her way to the school’s grounds in the back. It wasn’t just because of the cooling temperatures or the crunch of leaves under her feet. The very fact that nothing had exploded yet was a blessing.

Even the murders had paused. No one knew exactly why, but they had their theories. Detective Troias thought it was because they’d all tossed their Atlas devices away. She thought that most of these murders were to send a message since they typically happened where they could be seen, and it was all too easy to track everyone’s location using Atlas tech. Ms. Sirin said it was because they were thinking up something worse, since this idea hadn’t worked so far.

Bree knew that was the truth. The only reason why they would have killed all those girls was because it was an easy way to scare everyone who knew about the dangers Bree faced.
