Chapter Fourteen
Tommy Betrays Jessica
TOMMY REALIZED HE HAD not spoken to Jessica in a month. He vowed he did not want to talk to her again. He went down memory lane, thinking about all the good times they had together, but something had changed about him. Jessica had called him several times, but he sent all her calls to voicemail. He debated whether to delete her number and just be done. He also had not talked with Tiffany, who was probably mad at him for not calling her and telling her what was going on. Then again, he thought she probably already knew, plus why should he care?
Tommy wanted to block it all out of his mind. It made him sad to think about it, but it also made him angry. Tommy started letting his anger get the best of him. It was like all he could see was red. Surely, he thought Jessica felt the same way about it, and when she did not, he could not handle it.
Tommy received a call from the informant. He wanted to meet at the coffee house on Tuesday afternoon, which was in the next two days. That gave Tommy two days to figure out if he wanted to expose Jessicaâs dad or keep the secret. He told her as her friend he would not betray her, and her secret was safe with him. Although now he did not consider himself her friend, and he really wanted to become a top reporter. Being a reporter has always been a dream for Tommy since he accidentally signed up for a journaling class his freshman year of college. Since then, he had loved it. He was also able to do a job shadowing at the local news station.
The next two days came way too soon. Tommy went to the coffee house and waited for the informant to show up. A man in a long black jacket and a gray hat walked through the door. Tommy looked, but he could not see the manâs face. He thought it was the informant, but it turned out to be Mr. Connor. Tommy was a little confused. Why was Mr. Connor here instead of the informant? âHi Mr. Connor, what brings you to the coffee shop today?â
âOh, hi Tommy.â Mr. Connor smiled. âI only came for an espresso. How have you been?â
âI have been doing okay, working hard at the local news station, trying to work my way up. Enjoy your espresso, sir.â
âWill do Tommy.â
Mr. Connor sat at a table at the back of the coffee shop. He pretended he was only there for the espresso, but he really wanted to know what his old colleague was up to. An old friend working at LMU overheard the professor telling someone he would meet them at the coffee shop, and he had crucial details for his news story.
Thomas had remained friends with a few people at the University and he trusted them. If one of them had information about the professor, it was not good.
