FRANZ KEPT WALKING WEST on Calle Cincuenta Uno until it hit the zoo. The animals were raving, clawing away and banging their bloodied heads and bodies against the bars and doors of their cages. Each new explosion sent the beasts into raging fits. The tigers were especially crazed, trying to squeeze themselves between the bars, rubbing off their fur. Franz wished he had the keys to the cages and a way to avoid being mauled and trampled after he let them out.

At the park he saw government troops running south, away from the direction of the battle. After they had passed Franz ran into the park and leaned against a tree. He lit the last of his Cuban cigars. After he had puffed on it a few times he bent down and opened the suitcase to make sure it really was a half-million dollars in cash he was lugging around.

He knelt and looked at the money. He puffed on the cigar. Then he laughed. He laughed and laughed and fell on the ground and rolled around in the wet leaves. The animals growled and honked and shrieked, the guns bopped and chattered and Franz lay on the ground and laughed and cried and then began to shiver and shake and vomit and crap and piss until he had nothing left in him and he passed out.
