Chapter 17
Priscilla was easy enough to track down. She wore a great deal of perfume, and my nose caught the scent lingering in a hallway that led to the office. Amy and Kyle were in the kitchen preparing lunch, so the office would be empty. The door to the office was slightly ajar. According to the amount of perfume emanating from the small opening, I concluded Priscilla was inside.
Sunni pushed the door open. Priscilla was rummaging through the massive desk in the center of the room. She wasn't aware that she had an audience until she glanced up from her snooping episode. Her complexion blanched and then turned red with embarrassment.
"I suppose we don't need to ask the obvious question," I said wryly.
Priscilla lifted her chin and slammed shut the drawer she had opened. She circled around the desk confidently. "Then don't," she snapped as she hurried past but stopped. "Or maybe I should ask why you two are in the office?"
"We were looking for you," Sunni said bluntly.
"I have nothing to say to you two. You're not the police, and the faster I get out of this mad house the better." She spun around and came face-to-face with Amy. That seemed to unsettle her even more than us catching her in the act of going through the desk.
"What's going on?" Amy asked. "This area is for office use only. No guests allowed." She was trying to sound polite, but there was an edge of anger in her tone. She seemed to direct it mostly at Priscilla.
"I'd like to say that these women are harassing me. They have no authority to be questioning me or any of the guests," Priscilla said. It was her blatant attempt to divert attention away from the fact that she'd been caught snooping.
Amy smiled graciouslyâsort ofâat Sunni and me. "I think it would be better if we waited for the authorities to look into this murder. That way, the other guests won't feel put upon. But for now, I'd like to ask all of you to vacate this room. It's for office use only."
Priscilla didn't need to hear it twice. She marched away. Without a word about Priscilla rummaging through the desk, Sunni and I nodded politely and left too.
"Guess we can't really blame Amy for being angry," Sunni said. "There has to be some parts of the house that are off-limits to the guests." She seemed to be telling herself that more than me. Something told me, Sunni was going to exit this weekend feeling a little differently about her future as an innkeeper than she had upon arrival. "What do you think Priscilla was looking for?" she asked.
"Good question. One thing's for certain," I said.
"What's that?"
I looked at her, and she read it in my expression.
"Right," Sunni nodded. "We need to snoop inside that office."
