The subtractive/additive, replacement/exploitative, Native/non-Native distinction as defined by Tuck and Yang, Moreton-Robinson, Morgensen and Wolfe describes the ideology of elimination that structures colonial violence towards Indigenous peoples. Native as a left-over category, as something that is subtracted by the contact of colonisation, means that Native ultimately becomes an empty category, in which finally no person is authentically Native. The authentic Native becomes that of a culture removed from desiring bodies and preserved within colonial structures. Once Native is abstracted from the body, porn has nothing to represent, exploit or stereotype. Further, if Indigenous people were represented in porn, the subtractive rule means that such a representation would be a dutiful demonstration of making white, rather than an additive fear/attraction of Blackness as in interracial porn. Ethnopornography was the last moment in which both making white and fear/attraction could be exploited. Once the vanguard of ethnographers touched the “Native” its pornographic value evaporated. Indigenous “interracial” porn dissolves itself – porn is a medium of colonial touching, where the medium and distribution of representation makes all who are represented in it non-Native.
