Breakfast Guests

Albert awoke in a confused state and a wall in front of his eyes that ought not to be there. It took only a moment for his brain to catch up, but those first few seconds of alertness caught him by surprise until the previous evening’s events flooded back.

Ironically, the few hours he snatched on Donna’s mum’s spare bed, a single tucked into the smallest room in the house, were the best of his trip so far. The smell of bacon assailed his nostrils when he sat up and shuffled around to get his legs pointing the right way. The smell also explained the absence of his dog, who was no doubt very close to the scent’s origin.

Half of his things were still at Mrs Worsley’s bed and breakfast; he would need to return to collect them, sort out paying for the carpet to be cleaned and apologise for the terrible mess. Not that he felt responsible; he hadn’t thrown the petrol bomb, but it was also true that had he not stayed there, Mrs Worsley would have avoided all the trouble his presence brought.

Thankfully, his suitcase contained enough clean clothes to make up a fresh outfit for the day which he hung up as he dug around to find his toiletry bag. Shuffling to the bathroom, he heard voices downstairs, both male and female which he discovered, some ten minutes later, belonged to Donna, obviously, DS Moss and DC Wright.

They all turned as he entered the room, Rex getting up to greet his human.

DS Moss slid off her stool at the breakfast bar to greet him. ‘Good morning, Mr Smith. It appears you ignored my advice and attracted the interest of unknown parties who did not wish to have you prying into their business.’ She was berating him but in a good-natured way; she saw little to be gained from shouting at an old man.

‘Would you like some breakfast?’ asked Donna. ‘I can do you a full English. I’ve got all the trimmings.’

Feeling his attention split, Albert nevertheless eyed the counter with interest. ‘Do you have any black pudding?’

Donna held up a long black-skinned sausage. ‘I even have kidneys.’ His stomach growled at the suggestion, and Rex jumped up to balance on his back feet briefly because all the food smells and talk were too much. ‘Oh, I haven’t fed Rex yet,’ Donna added upon seeing the dog. ‘He has been asking for an hour, but I don’t have any dog food in and wasn’t sure what you might want to let him have.’

It was a day for there to be treats, Albert decided. ‘He can have a full English too, if that’s alright with you.’

Rex spun on the spot.

Donna got started on making another pair of breakfast plates, but DS Moss wanted to get down to business. ‘I got to the station this morning to find an instruction to find you. I’m guessing you have something you want to tell me?’

‘Is there any tea?’ asked Albert, looking about for a pot.
