POODLE
I wake up in the middle of the night with Melissaâs body wrapped around me. Her head is on my chest, and the tendrils of her hair act as a blanket on my arm. Crap, how long have we been asleep? I rub my eyes and lift onto my elbow to check to see if Lady is in her bed, and she is. Sheâs on her back, belly up, looking rounder than ever.
Which Iâm still sour about, but Iâm a little excited about the puppies.
Melissa turns over onto her side, and her bare back greets me. The sheet pools at her waist, and cold goose bumps pebbles her skin. I lift the blanket higher to cover her, so she stays warm. Sheâs so beautiful. Everything about her. Her mind, body, her spirit. I want to immerse myself in her. The more we give into one another, the farther I sink into her, the farther I pull away from Holly.
I finger the necklace around my neck and carefully slide out of bed, so I donât wake her up. My feet hit the floor, and my hands grip the edge of the mattress. I peer down to the foot of the bed where the chest sits, and that familiar pressure in my heart starts to build, the agony, to exempt the weight holding me down. Itâs violent one.
I need research. A new list of names now. The only place to get that is to see if Badge left his computer out.
I push myself off the bed and take one more look at Melissa, glancing down at her sleeping form. The familiar pressure I have, the one that makes me want to hunt and kill, itâs for Ellie. Donât get me wrong, Iâd love to find Hollyâs killer, but it isnât as important as finding my daughter because whatever I do, I canât bring Holly back. Sheâs dead.
Thereâs hope for Ellie, and Melissa reminded me of that.
I take four steps to the end of the bed and kneel on the rug the chest sits on. Lady whines. She hates it when I open the chest because Iâm never in a good mood when I do. Something about tonight is different. Something has changed. âItâs okay,â I keep my voice low and calm, scratching the top of her head. âIâm okay,â I tell her when she whines again, clearly not believing me.
I wrap my fingers around the cord and lift it over my head, my hair getting caught in the clasp. I hiss when a few strands break and get pulled out from my scalp. The mattress moves when Melissa rolls over, and I pause, hoping she doesnât wake up. She can never see what is in here. No one can ever see what I keep hidden.
Sliding the key in the hole, I twist, and the locking chamber clicks. With a deep breath, I lift the top of the chest and let the weight of the lid press against the mattress for support. Itâs
