Eleven

Hannah was agitated when they returned to Cooper’s truck, surprising him. He’d thought the meeting with Astra had gone better than he’d expected.

“What’s wrong?” he asked as he studied her.

“I’m not sure.” Hannah tapped her fingers on her knee as she thought back over their conversation with Astra. “I’m still bothered by how she managed to get over the wards to let Lorelai loose in the first place.”

Cooper’s eyebrows hiked. “That’s what you’re thinking about?”

“Yeah.”

“That was so not what I was expecting. I agree it’s a problem though. What do you want to do about it?”

“I want to head back to town, get Jinx, and then take a walk to the house construction site.”

“Nothing will have changed from the last time we were there. At least to the naked eye.”

“I get that,” Hannah reassured him. “I’m not actually interested in looking at the house.”

“Then what are you looking for?”

“Astra has a way across the wards. She’s always down at the creek. She’s interested in what’s happening at the creek more than anything else. To me, that suggests she’s worried about something in that specific area.”

Realization dawned on Cooper. “You think she’s somehow built a magical tunnel or something.”

“Or there’s already a tunnel there that we don’t know about,” Hannah confirmed. “Astra had a work-around built in when I first got here. You remember, right? Abigail and the coven cast wards to keep her out, but she’d found an underground route to let her in and out of Casper Creek without anybody noticing. What if there’s another route out there we’re not aware of?”

“And you think it’s at the creek.” It made sense, Cooper mused. Astra made a big show about whining when they shut down the original tunnel. That could’ve all been an act. “I’m more than willing to take a look. What are we going to do if we find something, though?”

“I don’t know yet.” Hannah held out her hands. “I need to think on that part. I just want to know if something is out there. She seems pretty adamant that building a house out there is somehow wrong.”

“That’s because she wants the area for herself.”

“Maybe, or maybe she doesn’t want people out there because it will make it harder for her to cross.”

Cooper rubbed his chin as he considered it. “Okay, I’m game. I don’t see how this helps us with the ghost though.”

“Yeah, I don’t have any ideas on that front,” Hannah admitted. “I need to think that through too. For now, let’s see if we can find Astra’s secret crossing, huh? After that, we’ll focus on the ghost.”

“I’m game to shut Astra down if you are. Let’s do it.”
