A Dirty Poker Trick
Some poker players see certain acts as dirty. In my opinion, as long as youâre playing within the rules, nothing classifies as dirty. Poker is a game of psychological warfare. Therefore, the game takes place with words and actions just as much as it does on the board. If you want to use a highly effective trick, read on.
It doesnât matter if youâre playing No Limit Poker or Limit Poker. The following tip should help you win more money. While itâs a highly effective poker trick, itâs not a trick you can use often. You can use it about once per session. If you play with the same people often, donât use it in back-to-back sessions unless you see a new player come in. You have to use it sparingly in order for it to work well. Okay, enough suspense. The following example is for No Limit Poker.
If someone bets the flop and you have a marginal hand, then call and say, âI know you donât have anything, and Iâm going to call you the whole way. Just letting you know.â Make sure you look as serious as possible while saying it. Or, if you have a jovial personality, say it in a joking way. This way it will match your persona.
The reason this comment works so well is because it traps your opponent into a corner. It doesnât matter whether or not your opponent has a strong hand. If you have a draw, or any kind of hand with big potential, you want to slow him down so you can see the turn and river cheaply.
After you make this statement, if he has a good hand, he will bet the turn big, which automatically tells you to fold. If he has a weak hand, he will check. If heâs sly, he might try to slow-play a big hand, but this isnât common; he would have to have an excellent read on you. There is no way heâs going to try to bluff you in this situation. Only an absolute genius poker player would have the capability of doing so, and there arenât many genius poker players out there.
Basically, by making the comment above, you force a poker tell. If he bets on the turn, fold quickly, which will send a message that he fell right into your trap in regards to picking up information. If you both check the turn and he bets the river, itâs likely a scared bet. You can play this two ways. You can fold and wait for a better spot, or you can raise. The latter is recommended.
