CHAPTER 15

Desolation

CASSIAN

Copper, Iron, aldehyde, the scent of blood. That’s what hits my senses first when I return to myself. The blood lust has finally waned, leaving me oddly satisfied. My hands are coated in crimson, as are my clothing. Before I retrieve Navaliah, I will need to change. I’m not sure how she will handle seeing me in my current state. I detect the sound of running water and pull myself up off the ground. Not sure why I’m lying down in the first place, but it’s a strange state to find oneself in.

The water is near to where I found myself, and I make short work of splashing my face. I catch myself in the water’s reflection - more blood than skin - before washing the remnants away in the cool, flowing liquid. It’s a stream, slow moving, calm, filled with various water-borne animals and creatures. I wonder if I should catch Lovahro a fish - a peace offering for abandoning her outside a run-down barn. I brush the stray thought away, knowing that a fish or even a hundred wouldn’t appease my little Heart-Stealer.

Truth be told, I doubt she’s even still sore on the matter, she can be quite forgiving. Although not so much where I’m concerned. Even though I like to believe she keeps her animosity simply to regain a level of control whenever I’m around.

Taking a few deep breaths, I allow the sounds of the forest - and strangely quiet village I’ve found myself in - to wash over me. Claws scratching against dirt and bark reach me first, before noises coming from a much closer distance finally register. Whimpers, cries, and whispered-prayers to an unknown deity. They plead for salvation and protection from a monster. One with blood-red eyes, markings on his chest, and dark hair. A monster who walks like a Mordharal, but with no humanity remaining.

It's clear that the monster they’re begging to be saved from is me. As this thought occurs all it fills me with an utter lack of empathy. I’m sitting here picking at loose threads from my torn and bloody shirt, and my body lacks any kind of tension. I’m basically sagging against the wall, with a serene smile on my face. Yet the moment I allow Nava to cross my thoughts, it all changes. My legs become restless, and it feels as though my insides are quivering.

This human fears me and is scared for their life, and the only thing that reaches me is what opinion Nava could have, on what I’ve done here. Sure, I could blame it on the bloodlust, yet would I have stopped if I’d come to my senses sooner?

Moving away from the stream, I hone in on the whispering. Bodies line the dirt path, some with their throats ripped out. Blood seeps out of the more vicious attacks, before the kills become cleaner. It's no wonder I feel satiated, I clearly had my fill of the inhabitants of this village. Searching my mind, I try to recall the name of it - if I even know it.
