Scott took a few moments to examine Claudia whilst Cara finished dictating her notes. The young girl’s body was twisted and mangled. Skin had been torn off her body as she was dragged along. She had suffered multiple fractures. Cara confirmed the extent of her injuries would have resulted in instant death. She’d counted over forty breaks, massive internal bleeding from a ruptured spleen, and less than fifteen per cent of her brain matter remained.

Cara confirmed they had taken nail scrapings and tissue and blood samples, whilst he sifted through Claudia’s belongings. Everything was torn, tattered or bloodstained. A scarf, blazer, tights, and school skirt all carried the hallmarks of the impact. He checked her blazer pockets and found two bus ID cards in her breast pocket and sweet wrappers in one of the larger pockets, along with a paper printout of her school timetable. He pursed his lips and studied the bus IDs. One was in Claudia’s name, the other in Mia’s. Scott stopped his examination as an item of jewellery recovered from Claudia’s body drew his gaze. It was a necklace with a heart-shaped pendant. If he wasn’t mistaken, it was identical to the one discovered in Kitty’s bedroom.

Scott excused himself as he needed to head to Causeway secondary school and went outside to call Abby about the necklace and bus passes. He asked Abby to contact Claudia’s parents to confirm whether the necklace was a gift from them, and if not, if they knew how long she’d had it.
