He’d forgotten his car.

Not forgotten it, really—abandoned it. In the moment, he had no other option but to fly rather than drive, ensuring a quick escape. If Zephyr’s pursuer had been an actual hunter, after all, those seconds might’ve made the difference between life and death...

But he had to go explain himself to Jasia, and ask for help, though he’d been dreading it since he remembered its necessity.

It would mean taking two buses totaling over an hour of travel, perhaps stranding himself in her remote neighborhood if he didn’t get in and out before the bus lines stopped running for the night—but he didn’t have a choice.

He texted her after settling into a seat on the first bus: everyone is ok, zephyr is safe, i’m coming to you. And with that, he turned off his phone. Perhaps it was cruel to leave her hanging, but he couldn’t handle the inevitable intensity of her response, the barrage of calls and texts demanding an immediate explanation. She’d have to be patient with him, and she’d have to give him the space and quiet he needed until he arrived.

But when he climbed off the second bus—jaywalking to her store on the opposite street corner, heading inside—and found her waiting, he realized with a pang of guilt that there would be no frenzied interrogation this time.

She wasn’t angry at him. Of course not; she had no reason to be, not yet. Instead, she looked almost on the verge of tears, her phone screen side up in front of her. “What happened?” she asked, voice tense with a fear that he caught reflected in her eyes, her hands clasped tightly on the table.

“Well,” he said, falling into the seat opposite her, “like I told you, everyone’s okay, and Zephyr’s safe at home. You were right that it was him. I saved him from being attacked.” A gasp that sounded almost like a sob caught in her throat at that. “No, but listen, that means someone found him, Jasia. Someone found him and they recognized what he was—”

A horrified realization dawned on her face. “Not a hunter? Mateo—!”

“Obviously not, or he’d be dead and I’d be gone by now,” he said evenly, and she nodded in response, though the fear brimming in her eyes did not lessen. “Hell, if I thought this person knew any hunters, I would’ve left by now. But I don’t. I think you guessed right, and he’s only some psychic.”

“I thought so,” she muttered. “I didn’t see much, but… I got the sense that he shouldn’t have known what he did. He shouldn’t have been able to find Zephyr—he just stumbled into it.”

“I think you’re right. If he understood anything, at all, he wouldn’t have chased a dragon down an alleyway—especially not one as new as Zephyr. He had no fucking clue.”

Jasia breathed out a heavy sigh, sinking back into her chair, eyes closing; in the momentary silence, the distant sound of laughing voices carried from the bar a few doors down.
