MELTDOWN

When we got back to Harry’s, Lea was sitting at the bar speaking to Foxx. We were about to join them, but Alana’s phone rang.

“It’s the office. I’ll be with you guys in a minute,” she said.

Alana headed back outside since Harry’s was full of customers and had gotten loud. I walked to the bar. There were no stools empty, so I stood close to Lea.

“Can I get you a beer?” Foxx asked.

“That would be great. Thanks.”

Foxx handed me a Negra Modelo.

“Gotten any closer to solving that case?” Lea asked.

“Not really. We spoke to a couple of family members today. Still too many suspects and we haven’t even started with the other party attendees,” I said.

“We’re not doing any better on our end,” Foxx admitted. “We’ve followed a couple of our guys but found nothing.”

“I heard Mara wrapped up her defense of Mele Akamu today. It’s officially in the jury’s hands,” Lea said.

“Any bets on which way this goes?” Foxx asked.

“No bets, at least not for me. I have a feeling she’s going to skate,” I said.

“Have you heard something we haven’t?” Lea asked.

“No. It just seems to be the way things are going this week. The guilty keep getting away,” I said.

Yeah, I knew it was a negative way of thinking, and I hate being that way. It’s the way I felt, though. The door to Harry’s opened, and Alana walked back inside. A visibly upset Hani was with her.

“Looks like Hani’s less than pleased about something,” Foxx said. “Hopefully, it’s not me this time.”

“Does it matter?” Lea asked. “Drama follows that woman everywhere.”

She took a long drink of her beer, and I desperately wanted to ask her to elaborate. Was there fighting going on between Foxx’s former lover and his current one? It certainly seemed that way. Yet Foxx hadn’t said anything to me about it. That was also an interesting development.

I assumed Alana and Hani would come to the bar, but they headed for the back office instead. Alana nodded to me as they passed, a sure sign she wanted me to follow.

“I should have asked for a Manhattan,” I said.

“You don’t just marry the woman, buddy. You marry the whole family,” Foxx said.

It was as true a statement as any that’s ever been spoken, but I’m sure you married folk don’t need to be told that. I drank what was left of my beer, put the empty bottle on the bar, and made my way to the office.

“The nerve of that little BLANK,” Hani said as I entered the room.

It was a word that started with the letter P. Did that mean Ms. Hu hadn’t told Hani about her dating Sora?

Alana must have noticed my confusion for she said, “Yuto visited Hani this afternoon.”

“Oh,” I said.

It wasn’t the most graceful or helpful thing to have said, but I think we all know what Yuto probably told Hani. Two words: Butt out.

“I was just trying to help those two. Why can’t they see that?” Hani asked.

I didn’t respond.
