SUNSET AND FLORA/FAUNA

Sunrise and sunset are pretty big phenomena—the arrival and departure of light is a big event for living creatures, animals, and plants alike. A vast majority of life on Earth relies on this cycle, and most living beings have internal circadian rhythms that follow to match the day or night.

As just one small example, young sunflowers usually face east to greet the sun when it rises. The flowers turn to keep their faces in line with the sun as it moves across the sky during the day. By the time the sun sets, the flowers are facing west, and once it’s dark, the young sunflowers spend the night slowly returning to their eastward position. Older sunflowers aren’t as mobile, and eventually they freeze in their east-facing position. But in their earliest days, both sunrise and sunset are important signals in the plant’s daily routine.
