TWENTY-THREE

Simon was true to his, or Carmel’s, word and he called Erin halfway through the morning after he’d put Harriet on the train home.

‘I haven’t mentioned this to Harriet until I’d spoken to you, but I’m flying over to California on Wednesday to meet the team I’ll be working with and go to see the house. I’ll only be there a few days, but Carmel is coming and we thought it might be nice for Harriet to come, too. Help her to make her mind up about staying.’

For a second, Erin perked up at the suggestion that Harriet hadn’t given Simon a firm yes, but surely she would very quickly be saying that once she’d seen the amazing life he’d be offering her on a plate. She swallowed, tried to remember what she’d said to Jasmine an hour before. ‘That sounds great. Can you get her a flight that quickly?’

‘The company will sort it out.’ Though he sounded nonchalant, she knew how much he enjoyed saying those words. He’d always been ambitious and, to be fair, he’d always worked hard. The only problem with that was that, with him at work all hours, she couldn’t be. Her career hadn’t so much been in the back seat as in the boot.

‘Okay. That’s fine, then. What will she need? Clothes wise I mean. Just casual or…’

She tailed off at his laughter. ‘She’s not a baby, Erin. I think she can pack her own clothes.’

Tears pricked the corners of her eyes. On top of everything right now, she didn’t want to listen to his mockery. ‘Okay, then. I’ll speak to her tonight about it and if she’s happy to go, that’s fine with me.’
