Chapter 6

Walker started to twitch slightly as he drifted off to sleep, it became more violent with legs moving like a dog dreaming of a chase. His eyelids seemed to come alive as his eyeballs were moving underneath the closed lids. It would have been quite a sight for discussion had someone taken a video of his dream state. Then he calmed as she appeared to him again, that innocent smile, tranquil yet frightening him at the same time. He tried to reach out to touch her, but she would just smile more broadly. Then she spoke to him, her melodic voice haunted his very being. Her only message was she wanted him to sit beside her, at the ocean. He awoke with a start, sitting straight up in bed with beads of sweat formed on his brow. When reality came back to him he glanced at Brandy, who fortunately had missed this night's episode. He crashed back onto his pillow, hoping the lag time would be short and he would be asleep again soon. He was, without any noticeable dreaming.

The next morning at breakfast there were no lingering effects on Walker other than a boredom, energy waiting to be used on something worthwhile. Like a stallion needing to run free across the meadow. He'd jump at any chance to get moving, to feel like his life had meaning, the nighttime visits were affecting his soul and not in a good way.

"Just got a call, we have to hit the road," said Brandy tossing back the remainder of her coffee.

"What's up?"

"They said that Treece and Jenny have been spotted at a medical clinic out in western Pennsylvania."

Brandy stared at the road intensely while tightly gripping the steering wheel with the concentration of a fighter pilot instantly ordered into combat. With siren blaring and grill lights flashing, her black, unmarked FBI car topped ninety miles per hour as she sped up US Route 95 northbound from Richmond.

"Hope my life insurance is paid up," chuckled Walker as they whizzed up the interstate.

"Why, it's going to me ain't it?" laughed Brandy.

"Good point, remind me to make Emily the contingency beneficiary," groaned Walker.

"Hang in there, it's quite a ways out there in the boonies."

"So what are the details?"

"Apparently some nurse at a county medical clinic, actually a small hospital, got suspicious of a rather antsy guy. They had come in for an abortion, he was her father. They were doing the paperwork and he just got more and more agitated. The nurse suspected he was her lover and not her father. She tried to separate them in order to speak with the girl on the down low. She takes the girl into an exam room but the kid won't say anything. The nurse spots him getting more aggressive and fidgety while pacing around in the other room. Now she's positive he's making it with the teenager. She gives a shout out to the local sheriff."

"Let me guess, the country bumpkin had not had anything other than a car hitting a deer call in weeks, gets all excited and runs code three.
