Chapter Fifteen

I put my hands on Tex and guided him back to the sofa. He dropped onto the threadbare cushion and closed his eyes. I gently pressed my palm against his forehead. “You’re burning up,” I said.

He pushed my hand away, but the energy he expended in doing so appeared to wipe him out. I went to the kitchen and ran cool water over a daisy-printed dish towel, which I then carried back to Tex and pressed against his forehead. I expected him to roll his eyes or fight me on the gesture, but he put his hand on top of mine and held the towel in place. This felt like new territory for both of us, and I had no idea what to say.

“I need your help,” he said in a voice so quiet I didn’t think I’d heard him clearly.

“What?”

He peered up at me. “Don’t take advantage of the situation by pretending you didn’t hear me.” He managed only a faint impression of his normally flirtatious tone, enough for me to hear the tease in it.

I sat down. “It sounded like you asked for my help. Forgive me for wanting to clarify, but it’s not something I hear from you every day.”

This time the corners of Tex’s mouth turned up. A small victory, even if his smile didn’t reach his eyes.

I picked up his right hand, set it on top of the damp towel, and then repositioned myself so I was facing him. “Unofficial Lakewood Police Department investigator reporting for duty. What’s my assignment, Captain?”

“First assignment is to tell me everything I don’t already know.”

“I don’t know what you know.”

“Pretend I don’t know anything. Give me the highlights and we’ll go from there.”
