Chapter Ten

Though perhaps it should’ve been obvious, Logan hadn’t anticipated how lonely working by himself would be. Even before he realized he had a crush, Noah’s constant companionship at work had gotten him through the tedium. The job didn’t require a lot of brainpower, just the repetition of pulling a pallet, unloading it, and filling the shelves. Without having any diversion, it was enough to drive a man mad.

And he’d been a fool and forgotten his earbuds at home. Idiot.

Still, on he worked. He felt the eyes of his fellow employees and his managers on him. Something told Logan those in charge were expecting higher productivity out of him tonight, since he didn’t have a distraction, but somehow he found himself moving slower. With each product that he put on the shelf, he lost a second to missing Noah beside him.

God, I’m fucked, aren’t I?

He wasn’t comfortable with wanting Noah yet. Nerves rose inside him, bubbling like champagne, and he swallowed them down as best as he could. It didn’t make sense that Christian would let him pursue a crush. They were boyfriends. They were in love. They had a future together, if things kept going well. Why would Christian want to introduce a complication?

It’s not that serious, man, c’mon. Christian didn’t mince words. He didn’t hold onto something that was already dead. Once Charlotte was gone, he hadn’t exactly wasted time pining for her. He’d accepted the change of the seasons, and if he was sick of Logan, he would’ve let him go.

Logan couldn’t let himself think of the contrary.

“Break time, Logan.”

He spun around and locked eyes with his manager, Peter. He even chanced a look at his phone, furrowing his brow. “Damn. Didn’t realize it was that time.”

“Don’t sound so excited,” Peter drawled as he continued down the aisles to catch any other stragglers.

Normally, Logan and Noah didn’t have to be looked for. They kept an eye on the clock, and as soon as their break began, they embraced it.

My mind’s not where it should be. Logan made his way toward the bathrooms with a heavy sigh. His hand squeezed tighter around his phone.

Two in the morning. Noah was probably up, but Logan didn’t want to risk texting him if he might be sleeping the sickness off. Christian would’ve been passed out by now, for sure; it was shocking that he was awake at all when Logan had been getting ready to go to work. He wasn’t going to wake Christian up either, not when Logan needed to prove to him that he had plenty of control over his own life. That he wasn’t weak or codependent.

Am I codependent?

He’d never asked himself that question before. Had he missed some warning signs along the way? If he had, he didn’t know how to fix it. The thought of pulling away from Christian choked him, and forcing himself to put his phone in his pocket instead of texting him seemed impossible. His arm was as heavy and thick as molasses. It couldn’t move much slower.
