I stormed inside. As if they’d read my text and knew I needed support, Harlow and Noodle rushed me, tails wagging. Dropping to my knees, I hugged and kissed them. “Thank you. I’m so lucky to have you two.”

Since the night had turned chilly, I fed the dogs inside the kitchen. While they gobbled, I poured myself a glass of wine. After rinsing their bowls, I pulled on a sweatshirt, grabbed my phone, and carried my glass to the rooftop deck. I sat in one of the two director’s chairs and breathed in the smell of salt and seaweed before scrolling through my messages. While ignoring Miguel, I’d inadvertently missed a text from my mom.
