Should I have seen her coming? Was I not paying enough attention to the forest around me? I can feel Glitz standing behind me, watching. Listening.

I press my lips together and focus, pushing away the fear. It won’t help us win. Hannah’s health takes a big hit as she breaks off from where she and Wheatley were taking down a Demon Knight together, and she eats the Rogue’s opening attack right in the face. Instead of dancing back out of the way to give me a chance to heal her up, though, she unleashes blow after blow.

I know this strategy. She’s using lots of abilities that build up her fel energy, which she needs for her biggest, fanciest finishing moves. She usually does this toward the end of a match when we’re already winning and she’s trying to show off a bit. Is she trying to show off for Glitz?

“I need backup at the factory,” Josh says, his voice tight the way it gets when he’s concentrating on not being eliminated. Hannah’s health dips low, and I channel a big heal to keep her from crashing.

“I’m trying to keep Hannah alive right now,” I say, a little breathless. “Hannah, can you back off for a second so I can top you off and go help Josh?”

“I’ve almost got her,” Hannah says, the key-smashing sounds from my left growing louder. As soon as the Demon Knight is down, Wheatley hits his speed boost and takes off through the woods to give Josh some support. Not the same as a healer giving him health back, but eliminating your opponent can be just as effective…if it happens in time.

“Using my last cooldown,” Josh says, meaning he’s almost out of big defensive abilities he can use to stay alive.

I growl in frustration. Hannah is at two-thirds health and is almost built up to her finishing move. Honestly, if she gets eliminated at this point, that’s on her. I throw a quick Heal-Over-Time spell on her and then bolt back into the maze of abandoned buildings, hitting my Flicker ability to get there as quickly as possible.

“Larkin, what—” Hannah protests, then cuts off with a flurry of keystrokes and mouse clicks.

“You should be fine,” I say, getting to the clearing just in time to see Josh’s avatar fall over. Eliminated.

“Nooo! I’m sorry, Josh!” I cry.

I cast Tripwire on his attacker, a Robo-Ranger, but it barely stops him for half a second.

“Robo-Rangers have tons of abilities that let them escape snares and stuns,” Glitz says, speaking up for the first time. “It’s not worth the time and mana it takes to cast them.”

I feel my face grow warm again, but I follow her advice, throwing a HOT on Wheatley and going on the offensive to avenge Josh. My favorite ability, Moonshot, lets me pull a huge, glowing white moon out of the sky and send it crashing down on my opponent’s head. It is incredibly fun, and it does buckets of damage.

I hit the key to cast it and grin.
