Digressing for a moment, I don’t mind a semi-psychic response on A-x-x provided that it solves a temporary problem and will be manageable thereafter. It is true that North has an awkward response over One Heart, being midway between One No-Trump and a natural Two No-Trumps. However, One Spade will do nothing to close the gap. Suppose my next bid is Two of any suit: in each case North will have a borderline decision. His best bid over One Heart is Two Clubs; then, having responded at the two level, he can afford to make a minimum call on the next round, passing Two Hearts or giving simple preference over Two Diamonds.

Still, we seem to have landed on our feet, as the hands fit well and Four Hearts is a reasonable contract. On the first trick East goes up with the ace of diamonds and returns the two, which I take with the king. Clearly East has the doubleton A-2 and a ruff is threatened. I try a low heart, but West goes in with the ace and gives his partner the expected ruff in diamonds. East exits with the ten of spades. I win with the king and lead a high heart, on which East discards a club. The position is now:
