Definitions of Terms

Punctuation is easier if you remember a few definitions:

SUBJECT: The word or group of words that a clause or sentence makes a statement about.

The lawyer had objected to the evidence.

PREDICATE: The word or group of words that makes a statement about the subject. The complete predicate is the main verb plus any modifiers and complements attached to it.

The lawyer had objected to the evidence.

The simple predicate is the main verb (with its helping verbs).

The lawyer had objected to the evidence.
