Chapter 11

As the Flanagans sat to go through photos, Hayden joined Jack, David, and Evan in the kitchen. They hadn’t said anything about his relationship with Sean, and he wanted to make sure they weren’t going to say something stupid that would upset Sean.

“Another drink, Hayden?” Evan asked.

“Yes, thanks.” He glanced over his shoulder to check if Sean was all right. He seemed to be. He lowered his voice. “While I’ve got you all here, I need to ask you something.”

“What’s up?” David asked.

“Have you got a problem with me dating your brother?”

They all frowned and Jack answered. “Of course not.”

“You don’t have a problem with him being gay?”

“No,” Evan said.

“Good.” He hesitated. “Be careful with what you say over the next few days. He’s a bit sensitive.”

“Sure,” David said.

He took the drink Evan handed him. “I’m glad we got that cleared up.”

“Did he really think we’d care?” Jack asked.

Spoken like someone who’d never had to worry about fitting in in his life. Hayden nodded. “Of course he did. Hell, even I sometimes worry how people are going to react and you all know I’ve got no problem with who I am. There are always going to be ignorant people out there, and you’re not just anyone. You’re family.”

“We should probably keep him away from my dad at the wedding,” David said.

Hayden groaned. “You’re right.” He hadn’t considered David’s father, but if there was ever a man to say the wrong thing at the wrong time, it was Bob Randall. He’d met him once when he went to their place to do wedding plans with Zita, and he’d seen the expression on Bob’s face when he’d noticed there was a man helping with the planning. Distaste was a nice word for it. “I’ll make a point of it.”

“We’re going to be busy keeping Bob to his side of the family,” Evan joked.

David scowled. “Yeah. I’ll have a word to my brother and sister. They might be able to keep Dad under control.”

Hayden felt sorry for him. David was the nicest guy in the world, but his father was an opinionated, ignorant, mega-wealthy white man who’d known nothing but privilege. There’d been a few issues when David was dating Zita, and David and Bob had come to a tentative truce. Now any slightly controversial topic was taboo when Zita and Bob were in the same room together.

“Is there anyone else we need to worry about?” Hayden asked.

“There are a couple, but I don’t think they’ll say anything. They’ll probably just scowl,” David said.

Which could be just as damaging. “All right, well, I’ll prepare Sean.” He turned to Jack. “What about at your wedding?”

“I don’t know. I don’t think anyone would be so rude.”

“All right. Good.” Behind him, Carly had fired up her laptop.

“Better get some tissues out,” Evan said. He left the kitchen, putting two boxes of tissues on the coffee table near the group and then sat on the arm of the sofa next to Carly.

Hayden frowned. “Why?”

“They all cry when they watch the movie,” Jack said.
