TWELVE

I CHECKED THE BACK SEAT of my leased SUV and the two Trader Joe’s paper bags stuffed with Kassandra’s belongings.

She never did come back to my place, some excuse about getting a rental car while waiting for the insurance to sort out the Kia’s status. So, I volunteered to pack what little she had left behind and take it to the office on Monday morning.

And here I was, Monday morning, on the 51 headed south, eager to get the real story behind the car rental excuse. Something told me that the tall cop had a role. Leading man? Get a life, Monica.

With a working cell and my leased vehicle soon to be returned to the leasing company, I still felt more in control than yesterday. What a mess that had turned out to be. And I had no idea if Brenda was home or if she spent the night—Nah, I had left Dior with her, she must have gone back home. I would call her later. So, I kept my mind occupied with this and that, trying to avoid what I really wanted to know—how and where was Tristan... and Celine?

My new appointment with Nancy Miller was for one p.m., plenty of time to catch up with the weekend news at the office. I could grab something to eat and revisit in my mind every word of my late-night conversation with a tired and frustrated Tristan. Poor Tristan, still waiting for Alexander to show up while the rancher in charge of the horses grew more impatient by the hour.

I parked the SUV and entered through the fancy main door, instead of the one reserved for employees and Realtors. This way I wouldn’t miss Kassandra, and I could tell by what she wore if she went home to sleep and changed her clothes... or not. Hey, what are friends for?

She wasn’t sitting behind the large receptionist's desk. Of course not, she had been promoted, how could I forget? She had two helpers to answer the phones. I guessed that made her the office manager. The phones were ringing and being answered, but the helpers were out of sight. Remote answering?

Kassandra must have seen me coming. Duh—the security camera by the main door gave me away. She appeared from what I assumed was her new office and motioned me to follow. Everything was still so new and emanating good businesslike vibes. I felt sure by now we were all ready for a better scripted daily routine.

Kassandra had on a different outfit than when I last saw her at Greg’s place. So, she did go home. Alone? Stop it, Monica.

“What kind of car did you get?” I asked.

“Huh? It’s a lease, I didn’t buy anything.” She shrugged, nonchalant. “It’s a plain Ford. I wanted an electric car. You know, just to see how it feels since I may decide to spring for one after all. They practically laughed me off the lot saying my insurance terms didn’t cover electric cars.” She shrugged it off.
