Chapter Twenty-One
Louie turned and watched as Aaron and the woman left the room. Then he turned to me and said, âWhat in the hell is going on?â
âYou got me. Aaron said they wanted to talk to me so they could get me off the suspect list. I guess Pixieâs uncle thinks I killed Pixie. Heâs some kind of bad guy named Maligno, that meansâ¦â
âYeah, evil one or something like that.â
âGod, they met me at the front door with a bunch of guys in flak vests and escorted me into the building.â
âHowâd this uncle get your name?â
âBased on what you walked in on, that prick Manning probably called the guy and told him I did it.â
âAny word yet from Katie?â
âNo, I tried to call her this morning, but I got the ânot in serviceâ recording so either sheâs got her phone turned off or sheâs in big trouble. I need to tell Aaron about it so they can check on her and make sure sheâs all right, get her somewhere safe before this evil jerk guy gets hold of her.â
âIâll get them back in here. Same as usual, you count to ten before you say anything and you look at me once you count to ten. I donât give you the nod you better shut the hell up. Okay?â
I nodded and Louie walked over to the door and knocked on it. Aaron opened the door.
âAre we good to go?â
âYeah. We donât want detective Manning in the room. Iâll be filing a complaint when weâre finished here and his presence will only thwart the assistance we wish to provide.â
âI can assure you the detective will not be joining us,â Aaron said and then he and the woman came in and took a seat. Aaron set a laptop on the table and introduced the woman. Her name went in one ear and out the other, and I immediately forgot who she was. Aaron asked if he could tape the interview, we agreed and he opened the laptop, clicked some keys and then went through the process of date and time. He named everyone in the room and the fact that we had voluntarily agreed to be interviewed and that at the time I was not under arrest. Louie and I acknowledged that we agreed to taping the interview.
âMr Haskell you are aware that Luis Alvarez was shot yesterday.â
âI am, only because you phoned me last night and then this morning I saw a piece on the news showing my photo and a request that I contact your office.â Not exactly the way it went down, but close enough. Aaron got right down to business.
âMr. Alvarez was shot in his place of employment. A small vintage clothing store called The Attic. Are you familiar with it?â
âI learned about the place just the day before yesterday. I went there, and purchased two Hawaiian print shirts.â
âWe have security tape of you in the store.â
âI would think so, they had three security cameras in the place, maybe more, but I only saw three.
