Chapter Eleven

After Steve dropped me off at the restaurant, my mind wouldn’t stop spinning; doubt was chasing me. What if my analysis of his friend’s dad was wrong? I was just glad there would be an autopsy to prove or disprove my theory. Regardless of whether I was right or wrong, during this trip I believed I’d opened the deputy’s eyes to the reality that witches not only existed, but that some of us had real powers.

Admittedly, when I’d suggested he contact a psychic, he wasn’t exactly receptive. I had to remember to take baby steps. I should have at least given him Gertrude Poole’s name in case he changed his mind. She might be close to ninety, but she was one wise woman.

Why I hadn’t sought her help before, I wasn’t sure. Maybe I should now—at least with regard to what happened to Cliff.

“How was your trip to Overton?” Aunt Fern asked as I reached the landing to my apartment. Probably having heard my heavy feet on the creaking steps, she’d opened her door and stepped into the rather dim hallway where our doors faced each other.

“How did you hear about that?”

She tilted her head to the side. “Why Iggy, of course. He couldn’t wait to tell me the latest gossip.”

I needed to buy a muzzle for him. Only kidding, but he was old enough to know when he should keep his mouth shut. “How did you know I was going to Overton? Even I didn’t know before I left.”

“Tsk, tsk. Ye of little faith. There are a host of people in town who have the 411 on the cute sheriff.”

411? Aunt Fern knew that expression? “Did Pearl tell you?”

“I’ll admit I called her. Now tell me everything.”

I wouldn’t have any peace until I gave her a brief rundown, so I gave her a few details. “I’m not sure the deputy is any closer to believing in witches than he was before I went with him.” Okay, maybe a little closer. At least he hadn’t mocked my results this time.

She grinned. “He’ll come around.”

I blew out a breath. “Aunt Fern, I don’t want him to come around. I just want a bit of respect.”

“Oh, I’m sure he respects you all right. Good night.” She wiggled her fingers and then grinned before ducking back into her apartment.

I was convinced there was a hidden meaning in her comment, but I was too tired to think about it. When I opened my door, Iggy was doing circles on the floor. “What’s going on?” I asked.

“It’s about time you got back.”

“Excuse me?”

“You spent five minutes telling Aunt Fern everything. You had to know I’d be dying to hear how it went.”

I chuckled. “You didn’t hear the conversation through the cat door?”

“This time I did, but you should have opened it up and invited me to join you.”

I didn’t need his attitude right now. He went through the cat door on a daily basis. If he wanted to hear what I had to say, he should have just joined us.
