October finished brilliantly with orange leaves everywhere. The birds of prey finally left the island, flying in great black clouds across the Juan de Fuca Strait. The whales migrated and almost daily Natasha saw humpbacks and gray whales, blowing or leaping or feeding on the herring balls that were easy to find because seagulls covered the waters above them in noisy numbers. Orcas even made the occasional appearance and sea lions threaded the waters closer to shore.
Mrs. Weatherspoon outdid herself making Natasha into a squirrel and Charlie into a fashion doll.
On Halloween Charlie and Natasha went skipping happily to school. Fionaâs only worry was that although Charlie would be sleeping at Ashleyâs, going to the bonfire, and seeing the fireworks and trick-or-treating, Natasha had nothing planned beyond the party in her classroom.
âWouldnât you like one of us to take you trick-or-treating?â asked Fiona.
âNo, the houses are too far apart and itâs too dark. Probably no one will even be handing out candy around us,â said Natasha.
Fiona had spoken to several girls at school about this, wondering if Al, who had bought candy for the trick-or-treaters over Joâs and Mrs. Weatherspoonâs protests, had bought enough and was told that in the more remote rural areas, such as Farhill Road where the McCreadys lived, no one came trick-or-treating. That the majority of trick-or-treating happened in the streets around St. Maryâs By the Sea, where the houses were close together on small lots and the trick-or-treaters could cover a lot of ground on well-lit streets.
âWell, I bet Mrs. Weatherspoon would drive us and pick us up if we took you into town,â said Fiona.
But Natasha just shook her head. Even though she had lived with Mrs. Weatherspoon and Jo for a month, she was still shy with them and didnât engage them in conversation if she could help it. So Fiona dropped the subject but she still worried. She knew that Natasha wouldnât enjoy the firehall celebrations either. She hated noisy fireworks and crowds and too much excitement. And she wouldnât watch scary Halloween movies with the rest of them. Fiona wished she could think of something that would be fun for Natasha on Halloween but she couldnât.
