Chapter

Fourteen

Artemis waited impatiently inside her tent, restringing her bow as the day turned to evening. Outside, the wind howled, blown with unnatural force as a unit of air spirits left the camp to seek the eastern front. Zeus was ordering more and more of their servants toward the main battle lines of their war against the Titans, relying on fewer and fewer to defend the Father’s throne. Even now, as the clouds of ash that plagued the west came almost to the gates, he failed to see the danger. It was all Artemis could do to keep herself there long enough to arrange this meeting.

Just then, the dirt beneath her feet stirred, sending dust floating into the air like a cloud. Backing away, Artemis set her bow aside and crossed her arms. Slowly, the dust began to stir before her, eventually taking the rough shape of a man. The earth spirit’s features were indistinct, but she could tell through the roughness of his countenance that he was uneasy about being in her presence.

“I come as commanded, my lady,” the earth spirit said, taking a short bow. “What service may I render to the goddess of the hunt?”

Artemis eyed this messenger carefully. She had no way of knowing to whom he held allegiance. Zeus had many spies in the armies of his fellow gods, always seeking to undermine their authority with his own. Could she trust this spirit to carry out her will?

“My lady?” the earth spirit asked again, drifting closer to her, his legs never fully separating from the dirt floor.

“You will gather what spirits you can and assemble near the ash clouds that encroach upon the Father’s throne,” she finally said. “Our scouts have not yet returned, and I fear the Titans may have an army in wait for the newborns. We will be ready to march at the first sound of battle.”

The earth spirit considered a response. The ground at his feet shuddered slightly, losing form, and then rebuilding into the shape of human legs.

“Zeus will not approve of this.” The spirit sounded concerned. “He orders that all but the Father’s honor guard move to the eastern front.”

Artemis let out a heavy sigh. So that was his goal. Make the newborns suffer and die just to prove their worth.

“Will that be all, my lady?” the earth spirit asked.

Artemis eyed the spirit for a few more moments, then motioned her hand dismissively. She would have to think of a new plan.

Just then, the wind outside the tent blew in an uproar. The earth spirit, unsuspecting, was blown back into dust and disappeared into the ground beneath Artemis’s feet. Covering her eyes with one hand, reaching for her bow with the other, she stared at the whipping flaps of her tent, unsure of what new danger had suddenly approached. Before she had a chance to decide she heard a voice in the wind calling for her help.

“He’s dying!” the high-pitched voice of a wind spirit whined.

Artemis was outside her tent in a flash, finding the wispy bodies of several air spirits all huddled around a single spot.
