CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“What happened here?” the large booming voice of the Sheriff brought me out of the back room of my office.

“This,” I sighed, pointing to the rock on my desk.

“Who did it?”

“Isn’t that your job to figure out?”

“Now, now, you don’t have to get all snappy with me. I guess I should ask a different way,” he sighed. “Did you see who did it?”

“Nope, I saw nothing.”

“When was the last time you saw the window in one piece?”

“Just a few minutes ago.” I hesitated to bring up the strange lady. She always seems so nervous and worried that someone will get her. I don’t want the Sheriff to go talk to her and frighten her even more. Why was I concerned about her? I didn’t even know who she was. I just have a feeling she knows a lot more about what goes on around here than what she’s willing to say at the moment. Hopefully, with some encouragement she will open up a bit, but I knew that telling the Sheriff about her was not the way to get her to let her guard down.

“Were you in here?”

“No, I stepped out to, um, um, take some trash across the street to the dumpster,” I fibbed.

“And you didn’t hear all this glass break?” he asked as he looked out through the hole in the wall toward the dumpster area.

“Um, no, I didn’t hear it. It must have happened when I went into the kitchen of the saloon,” I shrugged. At least that much was the truth I thought hoping he would drop it now.

“What did you go in there for?” the inquisition continued.

“I was hoping to get something to eat but heard you and Ed arguing so I just came back here.”

“Yeah, he was none too happy to see me this morning,” he said. “That name you gave me from the Saloon paperwork didn’t turn up anything. In fact, it turned up absolutely nothing. There is no one by that name,” he shook his head. “I was hoping if I confronted him about it he would be honest but he acted as if I insulted him when I asked for his real name.”

“Did he give you his real name?”

“Nope, he refused. Look, I don’t really want to arrest the guy. Truth be told, I don’t have any reason to arrest him. He might be cantankerous, but I think he’s probably harmless,” the Sheriff drawled like he was trying to gauge my reaction.

“He lied, to me and to you. He’s hiding something, and it can’t be very good if he doesn’t want anyone to know his real name. He’s more than cantankerous and I think you need to figure out who he is. He could have something to do with that dead body,” I said loudly. It frustrated me that he didn’t want to do anything toward figuring out who Ed really is. The mysteries continue to build: a dead body, Ed, the ghost, and now a vandal.

Relief flooded through me when I saw Alex’s jeep come around the corner.
