Pity Pie

Sammy was prepared. She’d hardly had any sleep the night before, although she hadn’t been spending the night making lists. She already knew what she had to do, or at least how she would get started. It was now her job—as far as she was concerned—to find the connection between Jimmy Holland and Blake Hendricks.

It wouldn’t make sense to go talk to Blake just yet. He was supposed to call her when he’d fixed her vehicle, and it only made sense to be patient and wait for that. She couldn’t exactly talk to Jimmy, either, since he was dead. But he did have mourning coworkers, and that seemed as good a reason as any to go and visit the dealership.

The problem was finding the time. Sammy, just like the rest of the workers, had a scheduled lunch hour. But that was really only good on paper, because they didn’t always get to leave right on time depending on the demand of the customers. Usually, they didn’t even get to sit down.

And today was certainly one of those days. The Radical Grandmas were back in, but this time they weren’t coordinating for a charity fundraiser. They’d brought their grandchildren and godchildren in with them, and the group took up an entire corner of the restaurant.

“Aren’t they just darling?” beamed Viola Hampshire as she pressed her hands together and watched two small girls fighting with each other in a booth. “I promised all the children we would take them over to the library for story hour after this. I wanted to get some good food in their tummies beforehand, though, so they wouldn’t be whining.”

Sammy noticed with a grimace that the children seemed to be getting far more food on the floor than in their tummies, but it wasn’t her place to say so. “I’m sure they’ll enjoy that.”

Agnes Miller tugged on her sleeve and pointed out her numerous grandchildren, rattling off their names. Sammy hoped she wasn’t expected to remember them all, because there were an awful lot of them ranging from a tiny tot who could barely walk to a bored teenager. “We ladies spend so much time together, we thought it would be a good idea to get the kids together, too. We figured they’re sure to be just as good of friends as we are. That reminds me, Viola, I was thinking we could bring them all to the movies when we’re done at the library.”

“What’s playing?”

The other woman shrugged as though it really didn’t matter. “I have no idea. But you know kids, they like anything on a screen, especially if you put popcorn in front of them.”

Sammy refilled drinks and made a mental note to give those tables and chairs a thorough wipe down once the group was gone. She loved the Radical Grandmas and the work they did for the community, but three old ladies who dabbed the corners of their mouths with their napkins were much easier to clean up after than a whole gaggle of children.
