Chapter 13

After being left in the car, parked directly on fairgrounds near the re-raised contest tent, for what felt like hours, I petted Bub in gentle strokes.

When Deputy Draco returned, his opening the car door allowed a lot of my tension to seep away. Being freed from the back seat didn’t prepare me for his first statement. “What? What did you say?”

“In cleaning up after the witches used their powers to raise the tent, we discovered a second body inside.”

“Another murder?”

“Right under our collective shifter noses.”

Bub wiggled all four legs and arched his back in a twist that resisted my hold. Once I release him, the familiar took off toward the tent as soon as his frantic paws touched the ground.

Draco motioned the sheriff over. “Sir, I realize you wanted Harper’s help on this case, but maybe now’s not the time or place. Especially with Savannah Swyft’s murder.”

Shock jarred straight up my spine and through my lower jaw. Blood rushed to my feet. A surge of dizziness hit.

The shifter deputy studied me with a slitted gaze. “Sir, it’s my honest opinion that dealing with Ms. Dade poses a high risk to the entire town and beyond.”

Sourness burbled in my belly.

“Her actions,” the deputy said, “forced us shifters to reveal ourselves. It would seem, we don’t need the trouble that comes along with Harper’s involvement in the case. Maybe she’d be better off, for all our sakes, if we took her into temporary custody as well.”

“Spending time in a jail cell isn’t at the top of my list.” If only the curse didn’t cling to me like chewed gum on the bottom of a shoe.

“Sheriff, we found another one.” A hefty sized deputy exited the tent.

“Body?” Frankenfurful halted mid-step.

“Another witch. This one’s alive and kicking.” The deputy jumped to one side and led someone out. “As plain as day, she was behind the overturned table.”

Covered in pie filling, Gwendolyn Abbott blinked in confusion through a mask of slathered fruit and sauces.

With a lift of my nose that would have pleased both Bethany and my aunt, I darted around the sheriff. Then past his deputy and rushed to Gwendolyn. “Are you all right?”

“I… I think so.” With a sticky, pie smeared grip, she clasped my hands. “Harper, I don’t understand what I’m doing here. I have no recollection of leaving the café or of what might have happened.”

“It’s her fault.” Minerva, flanked by Opal, advanced to near where other deputies strung bright yellow tape between sawhorse barriers. “If Harper hadn’t said she knew who did it, none of this would have occurred. She just can’t seem to get things right, and I, for one, am more than a bit tired of the chaos she’s caused.”

“Perhaps,” Opal offered a chin well-suited for a wart, “you should take them both in, Sheriff.” She glared at Bub then shot a hateful look my way. “She need not be here to cause more trouble.”

Aunt CeeCee spurted out of the surrounding crowd. “Gwendolyn. I’ve been looking all over for you.
