Chapter 15

As I rode in the bed of the truck and tried not to breathe the scent of blood, I wondered why the Thing in the Bushes didn’t come after me and Darcy. It ambushed Trini and Leanna. Did I really look so badass that I scared it away? Doubtful. Leanna looked a lot more badass than I did. And Darcy looked about as badass as Big Bird, so it wasn’t like my back-up scared it off.

When we pulled into my parking lot, I was already waiting by the tailgate. As soon as Tony opened the gate, I sprung out. “Good, I’m starving,” I said.

“You’re so weird.” The awe in Tony’s voice made me smile.

I glanced back at Darcy, who was still sitting in the cab of the truck. “I was thinking we should let Darcy beat us up.”

Tony looked at me skeptically. “You make Hitler sound like the voice of reason. What the hell are you talkin’ about?”

“If we show up at camp all bloody and bruised, we can say that he knocked us out and got away.”

His skepticism lingered. “And they’re gonna believe this librarian got the jump on two trained warriors?”

Hmm. Hadn’t really thought about that part. “Well, there’s no one to contradict us.”

“Kellan, if I was Janus and two of my Sankhain came in with that story, I’d kill them. If they’re lying, they’re hiding something from me that could be a threat to the Spring. If they’re telling the truth, they’re completely incompetent.”

He really was better at this than I was. “Well, what do you suggest?”

He shrugged. “There’s always the be-honest-and-face-the-music route.”

“Yeah, I don’t really like that one. You got anything better?”

He didn’t even bother thinking about it. “Sorry. I think that’s the best one.”

“Damn.” I was going to get locked in solitary for a month. Then Darcy turned and looked at us through the back window. I saw the hope on his face. Some part of him still believed we could help him. “All right. Let’s get this over with.”

I walked around to the passenger door and yanked it open. “Go away,” I said. No need to sugar coat anything.

Darcy looked confused. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, get in your car and drive. Go back to the hospice and sit with your sister. Go to your apartment and sleep. Go to Disney World and dance with Cinderella. I don’t care, just get out of here.”

“But—”

“Oh, yeah, almost forgot.” I reached into the glove box and rummaged until I found a pen and a piece of paper. Jotting down my cell number, I handed it to Darcy. “If you see that couple from the hospital, call me. Then run far, far away.”

Darcy’s frown deepened. “But—”

I pulled him out of the truck and slammed him into the hood of his car. Pain usually got the point across. I made sure I looked him in the eyes, and tried to ignore the hurt look they carried. “Go. Away.”

“Tell me what’s going on.”

Darcy had that stubborn look on his face that meant he would keep coming back.
