Chapter 24

Phoenyx

Pacing my bedroom like a caged Hellhound, I finally hear a knock on the door and Mom pokes her head in.

“Sorry, Nyxie, that business took a lot longer than I’d hoped,” she says.

“Everything okay?” I ask, worry coursing through me at her fierce frown.

“Nothing you need to worry about,” she says, but I’m not reassured.

Atlas’s ‘escape’ must’ve been discovered, and the entire Demon Guard is probably searching for him as we stand here. I need to get this show on the road.

“So, what’s up?” she asks, coming inside and closing the door.

“A lot,” I say with a sigh. “Please sit and promise to keep your fireballs to a minimum.”

“Oh, Hell,” she says with a small smile. “What have you done?”

“Before I get into that, can I ask exactly what your business was?” A segue would be awesome right about now because I have no idea where to start.

She frowns again. “Why?”

“Mom, please.”

She shrugs. “A prisoner has escaped from the dungeon and even though Roberta has no paperwork for him, Cale is convinced he is not only supposed to be in there but supposed to be in there. It’s a fucking mess.”

“Dammit,” I mutter.

“You know something about this?” Mom asks, jumping up and gripping my arm. “Phoenyx Mara, what the fuck are you involved in?”

“Sit and keep the fireballs to a minimum, please,” I repeat, taking my arm back.

She grimaces at me, but she sits and tucks her hands under her armpits, almost rebelliously. I stifle my nervous laugh. Gaia is exactly like her in temperament.

“The Demon in question is called Atlas. He’s my friend. I was there when Cale hauled him into the prison and to be quite frank, he is an asshole. Cale that is. Not Atlas. He is…lovely,” I say, not wanting to hand her two grenades at once. Clear him first, then tell her we are destined, or whatever.

“You were there how?” she grits out.

“In the library. They came crashing through the doors and Cale arrested him. It was unjust and you know how much that irks me. As I said, Atlas is a friend and well, I couldn’t stand by and watch him face you in the arena to be eradicated so I broke him out of prison.”

There. I’ve said it.

And I kind of wish I hadn’t.

She is furious.

So furious, her hair has set on fire in her rage.

I quake under her fiery gaze, stumbling back as she rises, her hands clenched at her sides.

“You broke him out of prison?” she hisses. “What were you thinking?”

“That I wasn’t going to let him die because of Cale’s bad attitude,” I say, trying to find the courage that I know is inside me. Luckily, I find it and grip onto it like a lifeline.

“Nyx, you are in so much fucking trouble,” she growls. “What you did was treasonous.”

“Yeah, against my mother, for fuck’s sake,” I growl back. “What are you going to do, Mom? Stick my name on the docket to be batted to death by you?”

I
