CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

There was nothing left to say as Minsheng finished reporting what had happened at the Texas site to the officials on the screen. I had kept quiet for most of the conversation. I’d not slept much since our attack, though I’d eaten. My helmet was almost depleted, and several of the artifacts felt a lot less powerful.

I felt guilty for using up the world’s most powerful objects to block portals we shouldn’t have opened in the first place, but there wasn’t a lot to be done about it. I was starting to tire of hiding from Kirdash. Did we have no other options?

Fighting him won’t be easy, Zephyr said.

Nothing ever is. We’ve always run from him or avoided him, and it never goes according to plan. People die and things break, and we survive. At some point, it has to end. It can’t be impossible to beat him. I refuse to believe it. Otherwise, he’d walk through a portal and kill us all.

Kirdash is scared, Nuri said, confirming that he believed what we did.

The prophecy does talk about the Henera winning, Roth added. The pegasus was sitting in a large tub of water at the back of the room.

I’m tired of running. I have been for a while, but we’re not ready to fight him either. Zephyr gave my hand a squeeze.

Then I guess we’ll have to get ready.

“Aella, you there?” the general asked to get my attention. Everyone was staring at me.

“Sorry. I was talking to the others.”

“The President asked when you could begin closing the other portals?” The general smiled as he spoke, but it didn’t reach his eyes. I was sure that no one was impressed that I hadn’t been paying attention.

“We can’t,” I replied, knowing I was about to piss them off even more. “The artifacts don’t have enough power left in them. Kirdash is going to be looking for us to unbury them and attempt to close them. He’ll have those portals closely monitored. There’s nothing we can do but keep them buried for now.”

There was silence after I finished speaking.

“I want to take Kirdash on. It’s the only way. Beat him once and for all. Otherwise, we’re always going to be dreading the moment he attacks.”

“What do you need?” the President asked, the first to acknowledge what I’d said. His voice was quiet but steady. He knew that wasn’t a lighthearted statement, that I meant it.

“Anything that can help that we don’t have. I want every artifact we know. Instead of using them to shut portals, I want them on all of us who are willing to fight. I want every piece of information known to anyone about what Kirdash may or may not be able to do. If he can do it, I should be able to as well.”

“The Sanctuary has a small list of artifacts and has been working with the organization and Amcika,” Sierrathen told everyone. “We’ll make sure you get everything we know about, and we’ll begin finding you everything we can on the dark elf.
