FOURTEEN

Dannee Ocly walked alongside her partner as they approached the tiny storefront on Meerka Way that turned out to be the headquarters of Ankh Security.

“I’m looking forward to this,” she’d said to Aleta lothLathna as they’d first left the castle prepared to follow Lord Doval’s instructions, as relayed by Captain Dru, to shut Ankh Security down. “It’s bad enough when people commit criminal acts, but to do it while pretending to be helping people? That’s just mean.”

Inside was a tiny space with three chairs and one desk. They walked in to see an elf sitting in one of the chairs, with two people on either side holding him down.

“You cannot hold me here!” the elf in the chair was shouting. “I’m innocent of any wrongdoing!”

Sitting behind the desk was a tall human with white hair, whom Dannee recognized from the one time she’d met him as Rob Wirrn. “Be silent, over there.”

Upon sighting the two lieutenants entering, the elf tried to get up, but the two guards shoved him back into the chair. “Lieutenants! I’m being held here against my will!”

Wirrn also noticed their entrance. “Ah, greetings—it’s Lieutenants lothLathna and Ocly, yes?”

“Yes,” Aleta said, “and you’re Rob Wirrn of Ankh Security.”

“I’m glad you’re here, actually. You’re saving me a trip to Dragon Precinct.” Wirrn pointed at the elf. “This Ear burned down a vegetable stand.”

Dannee sneered at him. “You shouldn’t be glad we’re here.”

Wirrn recoiled as if Dannee had struck him. “What’s going on?”
